Do you know the authentic way to eat sushi?

In this article, I introduce the authentic Japanese way of eating sushi. There are many sushi restaurants abroad these days, so please try the authentic Japanese way of eating sushi.

How to eat authentic sushi

Basic Eating Style of Sushi

Can I eat it with my hands?

Nigiri-zushi can be eaten with either hands or chopsticks!
・Nigirizushi is sushi with the neta(fish part) on top of rice.
・Nigiri-zushi is traditionally eaten by picking it up with your hands.
・However, many Japanese people today eat it with chopsticks.

Makizushi and Gunkanmaki are easier to eat with chopsticks!
・Makizushi and Gunkanmaki is sushi wrapped in seaweed.
・Chopsticks are more convenient because the seaweed sticks to your hands.

Proper Use of Soy Sauce

Wrong way to dip
Put soy sauce on rice.
・The rice absorbs too much soy sauce and crumbles easily.
・Changes the taste of the rice.

The right way to dip
Dip the neta (fish part) in soy sauce.
・Just lightly dip the edge of the neta into the soy sauce.
・Just dab a little bit of soy sauce on the edge of the neta is all that is needed.
・Gunkanmaki should also be eaten with a little soy sauce on the edge.

Proper Usage of Wasabi

At many sushi restaurants in Japan, the chefs put an appropriate amount of wasabi between the rice and the neta, so you can just eat it with soy sauce.

If there is not enough wasabi, the original way to eat wasabi is to put wasabi on top of the neta.
However, most modern Japanese eat wasabi dissolved in soy sauce. There is no problem with this way of eating.

Finally…a point to enjoy sushi more!

  • Sushi should be eaten in one bite.
But if it’s a large piece of sushi, it’s OK to eat a little at a time without overdoing it.
  • Reset the mouth with miso soup and gari (ginger).
Before eating the next dish, a little miso soup or gari will refresh your mouth.

These are some of the authentic ways to eat sushi. There are many delicious sushi restaurants in Japan that use fresh fish, so please try sushi in Japan!
